Welcome to the Trinity University Sport Management - History of American Sport - Omeka site!

Since 2016, students in the SPMT 3314 - History of American Sport class have been challenged to become historians. Over the course of the semester, the students conduct research on a topic related to Trinity University Athletics in order to "tell a story."

They look through the Special Collections and University Archives here at Trinity, through old newspapers, magazines, and yearbooks, and they conduct interviews - all in order create a historical narrative. To historically situate these narratives, or provide the setting for their stories, students also complement their story with information from secondary research in the form of scholarly books and/or articles. After piecing together a cogent story using the information and evidence they found in their research, students aptly transform their narratives into the engaging exhibits found on this site.

This is the first time many Trinity Sport Management students encountered a project of this nature. For the most part, however, you won't be able to tell. That is because of the incredible help we received from our librarians: Anne Jumonville Graf, Michael Hughes, Colleen Hoelscher, and Meredith Elsik. Dr. Douglas Brackenridge was also a great help to students over the semesters, as he is intimately familiar with the Trinity Archives. A special thanks must also be extended to our friends from all over the university (athletics, alumni services, etc.) who offered their own memories, and helped connect students with past athletes.

As with any project, there was somewhat of a learning curve for the students and myself. Overall, however, the students put forth an incredible amount of effort, they were actively engaged and enthusiastic about the project, and the quality of their work is exceptional. These students stepped up to the challenge and earned their grades. They should be as proud of their exhibits as I am of them!

So please, explore each exhibit in the site! And keep in mind that the images are often "clickable." Feel free to comment, or even contribute an image of your own as well. These stories are meant to be shared; please encourage others who may be interested to explore some of the history of Trinity University Athletics.
