Even though the team was deep in skill, the tradition of the women’s tennis team was deeper. Tradition played a crucial role in the women’s tennis program. According to Westerngard, they “had a reunion every year and had and auction where we would auction off players for the alumni and the fans of women’s tennis to play with for the day” (Westerngard, 2016). Leonard said, “Before every home match, we would always play the song The Eye of the Tiger to get pumped up for the match” (Leonard, 2016). In addition, she talked about a senior tradition that was developed when she was on the team; “the last home match a senior played, they wore a black shirt and on the shirt it had their team nickname and the year they graduated and the following year, the next senior would wear it” (Leonard, 2016). These traditions were highlighted through the 1981-1985 seasons, and some are even still in occurrence today.
