Victory over UT
Rugby had its origins at Trinity in the early 1900’s, but historical archives suggest that rugby was not played for over forty years until its re-establishment in 1968 by student coach Andy Anukitch. The team was composed of male students and athletes who wished to try out the sport, all of whom had relatively little experience playing rugby. Rocky Goodman, a transfer captain on the TU Football team from TCU who played on the rugby team as well, expressed to me that “they were probably the most penalized team in the history of rugby! (Email Interview, 2016)” The team only won a single game that year, but when you consider the fact that they only played one game against an experienced University of Texas team, you could say they were pretty successful. So, why was it not until 1968 that interest in rugby became evident at Trinity?
