Nate Coelen. Charles Houston. Sean Devins. BJ Moon. Those are just four names of Trinity University men’s basketball players to make All-SCAC Team after the turn of the century in 2000 (Men’s Basketball All-SCAC Team, n.d.). While there have been several other Trinity players and coaches that have been recognized by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for their outstanding seasons, the very first individual to be recognized was men’s basketball player Tom Gerhardt in the 1989-1990 season (Men’s Basketball All-SCAC Team, n.d.). Gerhardt’s junior year at Trinity University set the precedent for many of the university’s men’s basketball players for years to come. Because he was the pioneer for so many student athletes in the ensuing 30 years after his award-winning junior year, it seems appropriate to revisit his playing days. In addition, this paper will examine how he had gotten to his award-winning season, the legacy he left behind while attending the university, and what happened to the men’s basketball team after he graduated.
