Introduction to Trinity's Athletic Dorm History

Throughout Trinity’s history, the university itself has been relocated to three different cities and four different campuses (“Trinity University History,” 2019). In the 1950s, the campus spent the early fifties located in the old University of San Antonio, on the west side of the city. During this time there the university lacked adequate facilities. The University functioned by using military barracks and Quonset huts to house students (“Trinity University History,” 2019). In addition, the University provided an athlete-only dormitory, known as the Woodlawn athletic dorm.

In 1952, Trinity University moved to its present-day Skyline campus. At this time period, there were only three housing options for Trinity students: the John W. Murchinson men’s dormitory, the women’s dormitory, and additional athletic housing for men on east Mulberry Avenue under Trinity faculty supervision(“Trinity's Old Campus To Be Sold;” 1952). That summer, Trinity purchased the old Mulberry House which became the future home to twenty male student-athletes. However, the dormitory itself served a short stint in Trinity housing, eventually closing in 1960, approximately thirty years prior to the NCAA’s 1991 ban on athlete-only housing (“Mulberry House Leased By Southwest Research,” 1960).
