Sometime in the 1950's Trinity decided they needed to open an athletic facility to house all of the school sponsored teams along with club and intramural sports. They completed construction of the Sams Center in 1965 and opened it up to the Trinity campus. It was the first building on campus dedicated completly to athletics. The Sams Center offered workout rooms, recreation rooms and courts, and basketball courts for students and athletes a like to use.

It also housed one of the more popular spots on campus, the bowling alley. The bowling alley was where intramural bowling teams battled for the IM championship along with bragging rights on campus. It was also where students could rent lanes for them and their friends to bowl on. It also had Trinity's grand ball room where formal events on campus took place, along with various classes that were offered in it.

The basketball court, which is still there today, originally consisted of two levels, with the third level being a gymnastics area. Today, they gymnastics area has been removed to allow room for additional seating.
