Fierce Opposition

All President Calgaard had to do was convince the other schools to make the trip to Texas once a year, while Trinity’s travel budget went through the roof for this conference to develop. President Calgaard’s one condition of supporting women’s teams was not something that was necessarily being seen all across the NCAA, but Title IX has continued to change the landscape of college sports and allowed women more opportunities than they had formerly. As Charles Kennedy states, “female participation has increased…456% in colleges, since the enactment of Title IX in 1972” (Kennedy, 2010). President Calgaard was a supporter of Title IX during this time period, and because of his support of Title IX he was able to not only create opportunities for Trinity’s female student-athletes, but also those of all the other universities who have joined the SCAC.

President Calgaard also had to deal with the opposition from within the University as well. The high-profile and highly successful Division I Men's Tennis Program was taken DIII as well. This decision by President Calgaard was met with a lot of frustration from alumni, students, athletes, and coaches.
