Trinity Doing its Part

While surely demanding, Bob McKinley gives an immense amount of credit to Trinity University for the success of his brother. He specifically pointed out McKinley’s magical run in 1963 when he won the Wimbledon Championships. That event made him the only college player to ever do this. At that time, McKinley was left with a decision to play in the prestigious English tournament, or fight for a NCAA championship with Trinity. McKinley decided to play in Wimbledon, which obviously ended up paying off when he won the tournament. However, McKinley had to speak with several people both in the NCAA and at Trinity in order to miss a substantial amount of time in classes. He also had to give his best regards to his Trinity tennis family in the NCAA tournament that he would have to miss. The reason Bob McKinley gives complete respect to Trinity he said was because, “as a college coach now, I can’t even comprehend what Trinity did for him.” In this quote he is referring especially to head coach, Clarence Mabry, for his unselfishness and keeping McKinley’s dreams in mind. Also, Bob McKinley remembers the president, James Lory, saying that if McKinley went off and won Wimbledon that it would bring more positive attention to Trinity than an NCAA championship. In fact, when McKinley did win, it put the small San Antonio school right in the middle of the world tennis spotlight. An article from the San Antonio Express News written in 2015 even looks back and says that McKinley “put Trinity on world map.’”
