Though Trinity University offered some Intramural sports before this year, the first full time Intramural Director, Coach Jim Potter was hired in 1968. It was Coach Potter who laid the groundwork for the future of Trinity Intramurals. Potter along with his trusty staff of student workers set up the leagues, wrote the rulebooks, and handled the day-to-day work which included calling team captains, entering scores, and preparing for the nights events. Potter was revered as an amazing leader and a kind soul who used the strengths of his staff to create a positive atmosphere. Student workers were required to man the phone to answer questions and notify participants of their games. They acted as the referees, scorekeepers, and made sure the participants were having fun and avoiding injury. Student workers would post advertisements, game results, and tournament brackets in the Coates University Center for the student body to see. Dr. Heather Haynes-Smith, 97’, was an Intramural employee during her undergraduate studies and stated, “The Intramural employee t-shirt was one of the coolest shirts you could have on campus because being an Intramurals employee was one of the coolest things you could be!” Haynes-Smith fondly remembers her time working with the Intramural staff saying, “It was a little family we had and we’d all hang out in the office and answer the phone and put together flyers to go up on the bulletin boards.”
