A Look at Women's Sports

Clipping:"A look at Women's Sports"

An Article on the state of Women's Athletics at Trinity University.

In the April 2nd, 1976 issue of the Trinitonian, Danny Garcia wrote an article called “A Look at Women’s Sports.” The article was trying to show what the landscape was for like for women’s athletics. In the article, he gets some honest quotes from coach Libby Johnson. “It’s the biggest crock of farce when people say that women are going to sexually damage themselves by playing sports” said coach Johnson on the notion of women harming their bodies by playing sports. Here is what coach Johnson’s thoughts are on women’s sports publicity: “We weren't getting any publicity at all. They were treating us like some kind of intramural team or a team from the YMCA. I mean, we're an intercollegiate team that competes on a same level as the men in sports like basketball. I called them up and threatened that we were going to play a game topless.” In an earlier article on Title IX, we could see a coach Johnson be more held back in what she said but now we see someone who is not afraid of telling the truth (Trinitonian, 1976 pg. 14)
