Article on Trinity Women's Softball team winning state.

In the October 19, 1979 edition of the Trinitonian there is an article on the Trinity women’s softball team winning state and getting to go to College Station to compete against other teams from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. This was a major accomplishment for the Trinity softball team. They competed against 13 other teams; Trinity and Incarnate Word were the only division 3 schools, so the other 12 teams carried scholarship athletes (Trinitonian, pg 19 1979). Trinity beat Incarnate Word in the Championship which was a best two out of three series. Trinity won both games 13-3 in the first game and 9-5 in the second game. According to the articles, this was the first state title that Trinity had won the was not in tennis (Trinitonian, pg 1979). This shows the type of program Coach Johnson had created with as little resources as she had. This team was too good to play against fellow division 3 teams and even took down teams from bigger schools with more resources. This was a huge accomplishment for the team, but yet the article seemed to be tucked away, and it only two quotes from coach Johnson and none from any player. Also the article was placed on the 19th page of the Trinitonian and was not the main article on the page which was a column about the NFL (National Football League). This seems like a team that achieved something special but is being disregarded. Maybe if this were a men’s team it would be different. It could also be a lack of enthusiasm for sports at Trinity in general. This is an indicator of the frustration Coach Johnson had which lead to her resignation from Trinity which was reported in the April 25th edition of the Trinitonian (Trinitonian, 1980 p.17)
