As the starting catcher for the Tigers in his freshman year, Marvin Upshaw received All- Southland honors and was given the nickname “Maroon Mauler,” (Hall of Fame, 2001).
While playing baseball for Trinity, Upshaw was contacted by several professional baseball teams that had offered contracts. A few of the teams include the Pittsburg Pirates, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Atlanta Braves (“Tiger lineman plays tough,” September 1967, p. 11). Upshaw shared that when he played baseball, he is really playing football and that is why people perceive him to be playing a “rough brand of baseball,” (“Tiger lineman plays tough,” September 1967, p. 11). Upshaw would go on to turn down all of the offers because studies were still an important part of his life (“Tiger lineman plays tough,” September 1967, p. 11).
