1991 USWNT World Cup championship team

The United States Women's National soccer team won their first ever World Cup in 1991, drawing eyes from all around the world and forcing both fans and critics the strength of the team (and women's soccer) on the world scale. This win energized the soccer communities within the U.S., particularly the women's soccer communities. More attention than ever was now on women's soccer across the nation.

The celebration of this winning team dramatically altered the way U.S. society looked at not just this team of female athletes but how society would look at a wide range of female athletes for years to come. The positive elevation of these women to an icon level of status was almost unprecedented at the time and had never really been seen before in American history (Coombs, 2014).
