Introduction

"This is a class of players that feel like they deserve so much more. I don’t know if the work ethic is still there. I think these guys want to win, I think they want to be good players, but are you willing to do the hard stuff? This ‘I’ll ease into the game’ type of attitude is just not good enough. You have to be able to step up there and make it happen." (Smith, 2013)

The social pressures athletes are faced with is an important topic that is very often neglected when discussing major problems that can arise in sport. This is a huge problem in today’s society because of how often it occurs and long-term effects it can have on players. The types of pressures that I will discuss is injured players attempting to stay in the game so that they do not their team and coaches down. Along with the pressures of the individual “riding out” and there will be an examination of the potential effect of the coaches attitudes and how their reactions lead to a player being allowed back onto the field after there has been an incident. I believe that social pressures that arise in sport are the prime reason players with injuries continue to go onto the field which often results in much more serious and intense traumas to players.
