Coaching Staff

1989 was head coach, Gene Norris’ sixteenth and final season with the team. He was set to become the athletic director of the school, so according to Jeff Bryan, a freshman on the team, and current lawyer for Valero Companies, “It was possible that his head was in other areas.” However, it was not just the head coach, but many members of the coaching staff in general. Bryan described the team as “Loose and disorganized, almost like a club team. There were a bunch of new coaches on the staff. We would never practice in shoulder pads before the game, and they wouldn’t let us hit each other. The only real hitting we did was live. Coaches wouldn’t feed us before the games because they thought that “a hungry wolf is a dangerous wolf.”
