Regular Season

Above is an article from The Trinitonian, dated 3/17/72. This article was written as the Tigers had just beated the St. Edwards Hilltoppers to begin their 22 game win streak that went into the regular season. The Tiger baseballers were gearing up for a very successful spring break slate of games.

During the regular season is where the Trinity baseballers of 1972 really built their hype going into the post season. The regular season saw crucial wins of talented squads at Pan American, Southwest Texas, Baylor, St. Edwards, Louisiana Tech, Air Force, Rice, UT Arlington, Lamar University, Texas Lutheran, and Abilene Christian. The regular season is extremely busy and time consuming, as they would sometimes play 5 games in one week (trinitytigers.com).

Of course, the players didn't mind spending all of their free time on the field. How could they? This group of friends were not only winning at an alarming rate but they were having fun and playing loose while doing it.

The pitching staff was on fire, with Paul Stanley, Mike Bacsik, Mickey Mahler, and Rick Mahler leading the way. Paul Stanley was pitching like a man possessed during the regular season, and going into their battle with St. Edwards in mid march, he held a 20 inning scoreless streak. Mahler, Bacsik, and Daffin are all quoted as saying that Paul Stanley "was the ace of the team." He was overpowering on the mound, and his fastball/slider combination was nearly unhittable.

The last lost experienced in the regular season was against Texas Lutheran on March 11, 1972. The win streak started from there and ran into the post season (The Trinitonian). The Tigers final regular-season game resulted in a 4-2 win over Pan American. Paul Stanley threw a complete game and improved his season record to 12-1. He allowed just four hits, no earned runs, and struck out nine. Trinity entered the playoffs with a 32-6 record and a 12-3 Southland Conference record (trinitytiger.com).
