The 1970’s were widely regarded as the peak of Trinity tennis with the coach Clarence Mabry, and players such as Bob Mckinley, Paul Gerken, Dick Stockton, and Brian Gottfried. During their competitive times, the four players competed in a match some may refer to as “The Superbowl of College Tennis.” This match consisted of the four aforementioned athletes competing against players from the University of Southern California. This matchup between the number 1 and 2 ranked teams in the nation was supposed to erase any doubts as to who was the best tennis program in the nation. The thrilling match consisted of multiple lead changes and resulted in a come-from-behind win for Trinity University. With crowds upwards for 3,500 people, the bleachers were overfilled which was no problem for creative college students. Students ended up climbing on top of the Murchison Dorm and the old Storch Library to get a better view at this spectacle.
