Billy Daffin - Third Baseman

On the offensive side of the ball, Trinity was led by Billy Daffin. Daffin was recruited from San Antonio, where he played at Sam Houston High School and achieved a plethora of accomplishments. He seemed like a surefire recruit to a major baseball school, but Houston Wheeler was able to bring him to Trinity. Daffin posted a .330 batting average in his freshman season, starting every game at third. A Trinitonian article from April of 1972 mentioned that, “Twice All-American Bully Daffin is hitting .391” (Trinitonian). On top of repeatedly posting extremely high batting averages, Daffin was an extra base machine, tallying doubles, triples, and homeruns. He still ranks towards the top of the all-time triples leaderboard, even though he played in a time where power hitting was much less apparent in the game. Paul Batista made it cleared that he believed, “Daffin was the best player on the team by far” (Batista), as well as mentioning Daffin was likely the best player he ever played with. Billy Daffin remained at the hear of the Tigers' batting order for his time at Trinity, leading the Tiger offense.
