Independents seem to have had a strong showing in the early days of Flickerball. In the December 10th, 1976 issue of The Trinitonian, the IM sports that were offered (not just Flickerball) seem to have been dominated by independent teams, not Greek ones. In that particular issue, Independent teams werer dominayting sports such as Women's Basketball, Men's Basketball, and Co-ed Basketball as well.

In this specific season, Flickerball finals were between the teams AOT and ROTC. Both of those teams were non-Greek but they both played Greek teams to advance to the playoffs. ROTC specifically beat the Bengal Lancers on the road to the championship. Their next game was a playoff game against Winn Dorm, leading them to a 23-12 win over the dormitory team. The AOT team faced off against the Triniteers in the playoffs, beating them 15-10.

At this point in time, Flickerball was still in its infancy. Teams from all walks of Trinity life were competing in the peculiar sport. This particular time though was the time of dominiation from Independent teams like ROTC and AOT. In the coming years though, Greek domination of IMs and IM Flickerball would commence.
