!972 Men's Team

The 70's was a great period of tennis for Trinity University. A start for that decade was Bob McKinley, the younger brother of Chuck. I was able to interview Coach McKinley, who now coaches at Texas A&M University. The 1972 team was definitely the best team of that decade. I had the pleasure of interviewing Butch Newman who was the coach for the team at the time as well.

The 1972 team won the NCAA tournament to capture the Division I Team Championship in Athens, Georgia. They amassed a record 36 points to win the tournament. They were the first non-California team to capture the title in 12 years. Dick Stockton won the NCAA Singles Championship. Brian Gottfried was the singles and doubles runner-up with Paul Gerken. Bob McKinley reached the NCAA singles quarter finals and was awarded the Osuna Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship. The team had an undefeated season that year.
