This amazing story is about the Trinity University team that attracted around 3000 people to Trinity's campus to watch the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Trinity University, host the No. 2 team, the University of South California. The associated Press called it the "Superbowl of College Tennis." Coach Clarence Mabry called it "the best ever played here in the Alamo City." "Tennis Tech" fans called it tense and crowded.

This was the match that was supposed to erase any doubts as to who was the best team in the country. It was a tough match. After finishing singles, the two teams were tied at 3 a piece.

Bob McKinley, Pancho Walthall and Paul Gerken earned Trinity three points in singles play. Dick Stockton and Brian Gottfried, the top two players at the time were defeated by their USC opponents. John Burrman had lost as well.

The remaining three doubles matches were played at the same time, with Gerken and Gottfriend finishing first easily beating their opponent. Walthall and Burrman went into a tie-breaker while Stockton and McKinley were in a struggle.

As soon as Walthall had a smash to give Trinity the winning point for the matches victory, Stockton and Mckinley were ecstatic. The pressure was immediately removed from their shoulders and they came back to win, giving Trinity all three doubles matches and the 6-3 final score over USC.

Everyone spectating was in an uproar. The turn out was fantastic. The Stadium was filled, the 600 extra bleacher spaces were filled, and the fans even climbed atop the Storch Library and Murchison dorm. Fans were trying to go anywhere in order to catch a glimpse of the action.
