Amateur Careers in the 1960's

During the 1960's tennis was thriving in the college ranks because there was not a professional tennis circuit. The best tennis players were in college and were not allowed to receive money because they were amateurs. However, the top players in the amateur rankings were granted opportunities to travel around the nation and world to play.

Mr. Newman was one of these top amateur players that had the opportunity to travel around the world playing the sport he loved. Newman played in some major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami (Newman, 2017). Mr. Newman was granted the opportunity to play with all  expenses paid for in Jamaica. “Once you get to a certain ranking, the tournaments ask you to play, and the cost is usually so great that the tourney pays for the player” (Newman, 2017).
