Reporting Day

Finally the day had come. It was time to report to summer camp. He knew going in that he most likely would never play and told his mom not to worry about missing him because he “would go down for two weeks of camp and they would send him right back home”. At a mere 5’7, 165 pounds, he looked like a “kid amongst men when lining up behind an offensive line that averaged a height of 6’4 and weight of 325 pounds”. According to Mr. Costley, the level of ability from the recruits Trinity was bringing in made him feel very un-athletic and “the backs were some of the best [he] had ever seen” (Costley). However, the attempt at guessing his future of being sent home became extremely far off, when, in camp, all the running backs started getting injured. This pushed the freshman high school standout into a starting rotation between him and senior running back/future NFL running back, Greg Oliver. This backfield, that would soon be referred to as the “most explosive backfield in Division-III” was just the start to Costley’s career and paved the way for his future accomplishments (Trinitonian 1973, September 7).
