Field Hockey Photos Leave Hints
Although the time field hockey fostered on the campus was short, there are fairly large collections of photos that exist in the archives. They demonstrate what the teams played with, what the girls wore, and how the positioning looked during play (Field Hockey Slides, Archives). The photos all show that there was not coordination of clothing, except for maybe the color of each team’s shirts. Certain photos also demonstrate how the players were positioned during games, which looks nothing like how players are spread out during professional or high intensity games (Photograph 1 and 2, Archives). The intensity seems to be minimal as the girls are pictured laughing, clustered, and not dispersed for high-level play.
The second thing that can be drawn from the photographs is the equipment being used for the game. Instead of playing with real field hockey sticks, which are made of wood and usually cost a reasonable amount of money, they are playing with plastic hockey sticks. They also have replaced the standard concrete field hockey ball with a plastic ball (Field Hockey Slides, Archives). Since the sport was so new at Trinity, when it began it is likely that they did not want to invest in the equipment until they saw if the sport would have long-term existence on campus and continue to grow. Since field hockey had such a short occurrence at the university it could be questioned if it had remained on campus longer, if it would have gained more popularity if people took it more seriously or added legitimate equipment.
