Before Coach Steven Mohr came to Trinity University in 1990, the football program was completely different. Trinity used to not be known for its football. The football team had very little success from 1978-1992 winning no more than five games in a year. However, after 1993, the tides turned and, at Trinity, winning on the football field became the norm and if they did not win the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship then it was a failure of a season. Coach Mohr was hired as Trinity’s head football coach in 1990. It took three very rough years, but in 1993 Coach Mohr won Trinity’s first conference championship since 1976. In the Trinitonian later that week, a student wrote about the championship saying, “Trinity captured its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference football championship last Saturday with a 21-9 victory over Millsaps College. This win brings their record to 6-4 for the season and 4-0 in the conference, both of which are the best records in the conference." (Pearson) Although six games does not sound like many, "the Tigers had not won six games in a single season since 1977, when they went 9-2. This win marks the first title that the Tigers have won since 1976, when they won the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship. ‘I think we’ve solidified the program,’ Head Coach Steven Mohr said.” (Pearson). However, despite winning their first SCAC title, it kind of came unconventionally. It was dissentient and slightly lucky because everyone in the conference had a down year since they won the SCAC with a record of 6-4. Meaning they were 2-4 heading into SCAC play, which is very mediocre. Fortunately enough for the Tigers, the only games that go towards the SCAC Championship are the actual SCAC games. This is definitely not made to discredit their first SCAC Championship, but it did come with quite a few ups and downs throughout the Tigers’ season.
