Introduction

Chuck McKinley and Felix Thruston were two of the most influential athletes to attend Trinity University. Not only were they incredible athletes in their respective sports, amassing many titles and accolades, but they were two individuals that were resolute on positively impacting the Trinity community. They both used their athletic success to allow them the opportunity to spur changes they thought necessary.

Chuck McKinley was an impressive, successful tennis player that arrived to Trinity's campus in 1961 and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. His biggest accomplishment, however, was not directly related to tennis. It was that he helped to change the mindset of athletes regarding their sport. He encouraged athletes to use what they learn in their sport to grow as an individual in other areas and overcome the daily challenges of life. He showed, by example, what it truly meant to dedicate oneself to something, be successful, remain humble, and attack life with positivity and grace.

Felix Thruston was one of the greatest Trinity University male basketball players to date. He arrived to Trinity in 1967 and left in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration when he was drafted by the Milwakee Bucks of the NBA. But just like Chuck, his most impressive accomplishment during his time at Trinity does not involve his basketball statistics. It is that he played a significant role in the movement for racial equality. He was determined to shed light on the institutionalized racism at the university and encourage students to feel empowered to make changes.

My exhibit will explore the athletic success of Chuck McKinley and Felix Thruston and how they used this success to become positive role models on Trinity's campus, ultimately helping to spur significant changes.
