Before Her Arrival

 Gretchen Rush making solid contact

Rush joined the Tiger squad in the year 1982, and before she ever even stepped on campus there was already an excitement about her. In a 1981 edition of the Trinitonian, there is an article about the team's potential success for the upcoming season. The article mentions that every single member of the team had been ranked at one time in their respective countries, and that with the edition of the first-year player Rush, there was no telling what the team could do (Trinitonian, 1981).

While it may be true that there are still articles written about athletes on campus today, there is no way that an incoming freshman recruit would be mentioned. This goes to show just how prominent and important sports were viewed as before and during Rush’s playing career at Trinity. There was yet another article written about Rush before she ever arrived that boasted her player rankings at the time of her commitment; it read that “she is the fifth-ranked player in USTA girls 18 singles and number one in doubles” (Trinitonian, 1982). While our sports programs are all still very good, there's likely never to be a recruit as high-caliber as Rush ever again.
