Trinity came up short the past two years and were the heavy favorites heading into the 1972 season with Dick Stockton, Bob McKinley, Brian Gottfried, and Paul Gerken at the helm. They would have to fend off the powerhouse schools like the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, and the University of Miami. The big match of the regular season was a series against USC at Trinity. Crowds flocked to the courts to witness victory against the Trojans. This would set the team up nicely heading into the NCAA tournament.
