Trinity University qualified six players and had four of them make it to the quarterfinals. Brian Gottfried and Dick Stockton were on opposite sides of the bracket and eventually met in the national championship game. The journey there was different for each player. Gottfried had a rather smooth ride while Stockton had to overcome significant adversity.

Stockton faced Roscoe Tanner from Stanford University in the semifinal. After losing the first set on a questionable line call, Stockton slammed his racquet and went to wipe the glasses of the line judge to "help them see." Stockton eventually won the match and would face his roommate, Brian Gottfried, in the championship match.

Dick Stockton came out on top and brought the trophy back home to San Antonio, Texas. Gottfried left Trinity early to join Stockton on the professional tour and they eventually paired up and competed together in doubles tournaments. They both led successful careers and are still best friends to this day.
