On the campus of Trinity University, long distance running took some time to gain traction with the sport of cross country initially being introduced as an intramural activity for all students to participate in. According to an article in the December 18, 1963 issue of The Trinitonian, the intramural cross country event was an annual race initiated in 1961 that took runners through campus and into the surrounding areas near the San Antonio Zoo. Students were free to create their own teams and enter as many runners into the race as they wished. This annual cross country run was the extent of organized distance running at Trinity for several years and in 1967 this race was transformed into the annual Turkey Trot, a Trinity tradition that members of the Trinity community still participate in to this day (The Trinitonian, 1967).
