After the Decision

So, many Trinity Tennis Alumni, the student body, and people around San Antonio were frustrated and disappointed in Dr. Calgaards decision. Everything that the Trinity Tennis program was founded on and the reputation that it had built for decades was being washed away because of one “philosophical” decision.

After the decision was implemented, the Trinity Tennis program was not eligible for division three until 1993, so there was no postseason for three years. According to Coach Newman, “a lot of people thought Trinity had dropped their tennis program. It was a trying time because we did not have any alumni support, there was a lot of uproar, and a lot of discontent”. This made it difficult to attract players to the school and thus, the tennis program was “a shell of what it used to be. The women were ranked 23rd in the nation last year (1992), the men weren't ranked at all” (Harvey 1990).
