The Trinity Men's Tennis Team in the 1962-1963 season

Before the 1990s, student-athlete meant something entirely different in regards to Trinity’s tennis program. The student part was forgotten and the athlete portion was emphasized. Trinity’s tennis program was producing outstanding athletes; even top professional tennis players. These athletes included Bob McKinley, a former Trinity champion and coach as well as the brother of Wimbledon champion Chuck McKinley and Dick Stockton, the NCAA men's singles champion in 1972 and Trinity Alumnus. Trinity built a reputation of being one of the top tennis programs around the country. But everything changed in 1990. The school’s president, Ronald Calgaard, issued a statement informing the student body and staff that the tennis program was changing from division one to division three; a completion of the transformation of all Trinity sports to division three. When Trinity University decided to change their tennis program from division one to division three, it impacted everyone involved as well as the student body who was frustrated with the decision. In addition, it changed the type of athlete that would play tennis here at Trinity; division three tennis players were student-athletes thinking about an education and a life after college. This culture change ultimately became a great decision for Trinity athletics and the University as a whole.
