Former president of Trinity University, Ronald Calgaard

The decision was ultimately made by former President Calgaard. An opinion written in the Dallas morning news in 1991 by Kelly Carter, showed the emotions that were swerving around the program and sudden changes that were already made within the same year. Dr. Calgaard was helping the athletics here at Trinity become more elite. Calgaard pushed to "pump 28 million into athletic facilities" (Carter 1991). Carter claims that the decision was made more for philosophical reasons according to Dr. Calgaard. Furthermore, the switch in divisions had been discussed for at least 5 years. Thus, right after the decision was made, many people within the program were outraged. Carter states that Elliot-Hanson, a star player on the Women’s Tennis team from 1981-1984 and later the tennis coach during this time period was in “In shock” and lost her two best single players, who transferred to William and Mary in the Spring of 1991 (Carter 1991). Carter added that Dick Stockton, “hoped for their sake it works out and in 30 years" and say 'Yeah, we made the right decision. But that he “would be very surprised" if it did (Carter 1991).
