On February 23, 1962, Gene Norris was hired at Trinity as an assistant football coach. His hiring represented a shift in the coaching department as the football coaching staff was cut from five men to three. As a result of the low numbers on the coaching staff Coach Norris worked as a running back, linebacker, defensive end, and defensive back coach.

Not only was Norris the assistant football coach, but he was also a physical education professor, and the head golf coach. During this time in the 1960s Trinity was still in Division 1 athletics. Most Division 1 schools do not have their coaches do multiple jobs, so that they can solely focus on athletics. All these different factors reveal that it was almost inevitable that Trinity was going to transition to Division 3 athletics.
