Gene Norris, who was initially from Chicago, received his bachelors degree and masters degree in physical eduaction from the University of Illinios. He was hired by Trinity University in 1962 as an assistant football coach and as a physical education professor.

After a couple years of being an assistant football coach, he introduced an intercollegiate golf program to Trinity and became the first head golf coach. He eventually became the head football coach, but around that same time Trinity moved from Division 1 athletics to Division 3 athletics. Trinity athletics struggled during the transition but Gene Norris helped keep everything moving forward. Eventually Norris became the athletics director, while remaining as the head football coach where he continued to influence Trinity athletics for the next few years. If it weren't for Gene Norris then maybe Trinity athletics would be what they are today.
