After only being apart of the coaching staff at Trinity for three years L.W. Robinson, the athletic director at the time, announced that an intercollegiate golf program would be initiated and headed by Gene Norris. Jim Potter, who was a close friend to Norris, recalled how Coach Norris received the golf job because he was the only person on the coaching staff who played golf (Potter, 2017). Norris loved to play and coach golf, so it made him the perfect choice for the job. This just further demonstrates the differences at the time between Trinity and other Divison 1 schools.

The Trinity golf program did not get off to the greatest start as the team suffered frequent losses to other schools like Saint Edwards and Lamar Tech. However the golf team would continue to improve every single year eventually being able to compete against other schools on a consistent basis. In fact, Lamar Tech and Trinity became a fierce rivalry in the 1960s and 1970s as the two schools competed for the top two spots in the Southland Conference almost on a yearly basis.

High points for Norris' time as the golf coach came in 1968 when the team finished third in the Southland Conference, 1971 when they finished in second place, 1972 when they competed against future hall of famers like Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, and 1975 when they finisehd third in the NCAA Divison 3 tournament.
