80's - A New Era

After the era of civil rights from the 60’s-70’s, minorities had more opportunities to succeed, and took advantage of the ones they had. Rey Hinojosa, from the Rio Grande Valley, took advantage of his opportunity as he was an All-American linebacker in the middle of the decade. From “Trinity prepares for McMurry after shutting out LCC, 48-0” (Sellers, 1980) in The Trinitonian, we are told that Trinity completely dominated an opponent and Hinojosa was a major factor in this game. He was an important part as he had a huge game defensively as he had “11 tackles” for great defensive outing (Sellers, 1980). He was only adding onto a season that was off to a great start for him as he already had a high tally of defensive tackles. This article is important because it allows me to show that not only did Hispanics have an effect on Trinity athletics since the 1960s, they were starting to get recognized for it through prestigious awards that come along for hard-work on and off the field.
