Trinity Rugby made its debut in 1968 via alumni Andy Anukitch. Anukitch was a Thai national who had lived in England before coming to Trinity, and upon graduating was interested in experimenting with creating a Trinity rugby team. While they had plans to play multiple colleges in Texas, the team only played one game against University of Texas at Austin. The team was funded by the football team, and the jerseys were provided by the football team. The team consisted of mostly football players, although there were other students involved as well.

After 1968, this team would not go on to play in the next year, despite hopes that they would. Their victory against UT would be the first and last Trinity rugby game of the 1960s.
