Changes to IM's

Title: IM Action. Date: 1984, November 9. The Trinitonian.

This change signified that recreational sport opportunities for college students needed to have their own department that was specifically dedicated to intramurals. This shift reflects the growth of intramurals that was happening at college campuses across the nation including Trinity. Potter witnessed the need for a larger intramural program on Trinity’s campus and began to change the way intramurals were organized. Around this time Potter implemented new sports and games as well as created a co-rec league for men and women to play together. When I spoke to Potter and asked him how he grew the program he said, “the key thing was recruiting freshman as soon as they stepped on campus” (Personal Interview, 2018). He recruited the first years by joining their dorm meetings and trying to get them involved. Potter was very purposeful when recruiting freshman. Many new students only knew the people on their halls which led to intramural teams named Witt 1st or Calvert 2nd (Ophi, 1996). This was not only beneficial to the intramural program, but to the new students as well. Intramurals were one way new students could make friends and have a social network. In my interview with Jim Potter he said, “I wanted to get students involved with things outside of school work, I did not want Trinity students to be cooped up in their room” (Personal Interview, 2018). This quote signifies the care Potter had for the students of Trinity and how much he wanted them to have a positive college experience.
