Coaching

Trinity’s team was aided by the quality coaching and philosophies of their coach, Bob Polk. One of the main philosophies of Polk was to “take it one game at a time” (Smith, 1969). This meant that they were only focused on the game ahead of them, and did not look ahead to games or goals that were down the line. Polk knew that it they achieved their short term goals of trying to win each game in front of them, they would have a good chance of achieving their overall season goals.

Another part of Polk’s coaching that helped Trinity be successful was his philosophy on offense. Trinity was a very high scoring team, scoring over 87 points per game (Smith, 1969). This was especially high considering that there was no shot clock in college basketball at this time.
