Place in History

The Trinity team in 1968-69 was truly an anomaly in the barrels of Trinity athletics history. Success at the Division 1 level is something that Trinity students will likely never experience again. It should be almost indisputable that the 1968-69 team was the best in school history.  Even though they were amazingly successful, they did have a chance to immortalize their place in history even. Texas A&M, the team Trinity faced in the first round of the NCAA tournament, was a team they had actually beaten twice in previous years. Had they reached the final four or the national championship, they would likely have more of a recognizable place in history. Regardless, Trinity was able to do things that no team at Trinity had ever or will ever do again. It is truly a shame that Trinity was not able to build off their success as a Division 1 program. Trinity could have been a mid- major power like many schools of today. Trinity could have been like Gonzaga or Belmont, only starting way earlier in history. All in all, the things that the team did for Trinity were unmatched and remarkable. They deserve to be a feature part of Trinity athletics and something that more Trinity students know about.  The 1968-69 Trinity basketball team truly had a magical year and should be applauded by everyone involved with Trinity and Trinity athletics. Editor of The Trinitonian John Corbitt put it best, “it was a year of big games, a year of enthusiasm and student support… the year… probably the best Trinity has ever fielded… the year with which future years will be compared to for years to come.”
