Upon the completion of the USC game, Trinity would eventually waltz into Georgia as the heavy favorites after finishing the season with an impressive 36-0 mark. Sports Illustrated journalist Joe Jares stressed the fact that of the 185 men in the tournament, four of the eight quarterfinalists were from Trinity. Furthermore, the final tournament game had Dick Stockton face off against his teammate Brian Gottfried indicating once again how dominant the 1972 team was. After a long weekend, Dick Stockton and the Trinity Tigers came out on top as the 1972 NCAA Champions marking the first time in thirteen years that USC or UCLA did not win the tournament
