As Wagenbach, Drinen too was able to boast the title of captain on the baseball team in '92. Drinen grew up a huge fan of basketball, baseball and football, however after 8th grade baseball was his only sport. He mentioned that in his high school days he wasn't good enough to play hoops and he never had the right, aggressive personality to play football. Though Drinen downplayed his athleticism, he benefitted from having strong hand-eye coordination, a valuable trait in the baseball world. Drinen made the all-conference team twice and was an academic all-american.
