Padre great Tony Gwynn died on June 16th, 2014. In 2010 when he was diagnosed, he attributed his salivary gland cancer to his dipping habit saying, "Of course it caused it, I always dipped on my right side." (Rathner, 2014). Gwynn's death reinforced the danger of using smokeless tobacco, however big league ball players, coaches, and managers continue to use smokeless tobacco.

Though it’s unfortunate that it took his death for something to change, multiple states finally began to take action. San Francisco, Boston, and Los Angeles enacted laws banning smokeless tobacco in big-league ballparks. (Rathner, 2014). City councils of Chicago and New York recently approved similar bans for their stadiums and California passed a bill for 2017 that would place bans at three more MLB stadiums. If the councils of Toronto and Washington D.C. also elect to place bans on their stadiums, by next year a third of the MLB stadiums will have prohibitions on tobacco products. (Weinbaum, Steele, 2016).
