Transition From Scholarships to None

In 1972, the Trinity school officials announced that no more athletic scholarships would be awarded (Mahler, 2018). Both Daffin and Mahler spoke about the disappointment that was in the program when this news came about. While the current players would retain their scholarships, they knew that the dynasty that was being built, was going to be shut down before the peak is reached. The timing of this could not have been worse (Daffin, 2018). Imagine finishing 16th in the nation, and being told that something was going to happen that will prohibit the success. Allegedly, the President of the school wanted all of Trinity students to be paying the same amount to attend (Daffin, 2018). In lieu of this, recruiting became nearly impossible since not many could afford Trinity’s tuition (Mahler, 2018). It is crazy to think about athletes choosing Trinity athletics over the University of Texas and Texas A&M. The fact that the baseball team was gaining so much momentum and had it come to a screeching halt is a gut punch to the players. Without a doubt, the Trinity baseball program would not be what it is today without this.
