Coach Houston Wheeler

Houston Wheeler was the head baseball coach for a span of 23 seasons. He led the team to 3 playoff appearances, 5 conference championships and won conference coach of the year twice (Houston Wheeler, n.d). In addition to those accolades, he won 1960 Southland coach of the decade (Southland Announces All Decade Team for 1960s, 2013). 

From the players I spoke to, they said that Wheeler was a laid back guy but expected Trinity to play well (Hermes, 2018). As for recruiting, he had an eye for talent (Mahler, 2018). The fact that he had such a dominant team full of players from mostly Texas is impressive. Texas has good high school baseball talent, but the national recruiting that is present today was not the case fifty years ago.
