In 1993, Trinity Univerity was the only Division III school in Texas.  All other baseball programs in Texas had the ability and option to offer baseball scholarships to attract players to attend and play at their universities.  Trinity's baseball program did not have that option.  They had to attract players who could handle the academic rigors of Trinity University and still had a desire to compete on the baseball field.  In addition, they had to travel out of state for every conference game, which meant additional time away from school and classes.

Trinity University competed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1993.   The other schools in its conference were:

Centre College (Kentucky)

Rhodes College (Tennessee)

Sewanee: University of the South (Tennessee)

Millsaps College (Mississippi)

Oglethorpe University (Georgia)

Hendrix College (Arkansas)

Fisk University (Tennessee)

I asked King about the geographical landscape of the conference.  He was actually a fan of the conference when every other conference team was out of state.  He believed that the SCAC had a nationwide presence by being in different states.  The conference could not be considered just a regional program by expanding over several state lines.
