Other Texas Schools Explore Division III Athletics

Nearly every Texas school that later joined the SCAC was formally an NAIA program.  King claimed, ”This was because a lot of the NAIA schools in Texas realized that Division III was a better option [for them] because they did not have to give scholarships and the travel is funded by the NCAA.” (Interview with Dr. King, 2017)  Initially the schools that joined the SCAC after converting from NAIA were still a little more advanced because they still have leftover athletes still on scholarship.  It would not be for a couple of years that the playing field completely equalized when all teams no longer had scholarship athletes on their rosters.

Today, the current schools based in Texas in Trinity University's conference include:

Austin College (Sherman)

University of Dallas (Irving)

Schreiner University (Kerrville)

Southwestern (Georgetown)

Texas Lutheran University (Seguin)

In addition to two, out of state schools:

Centenary College of Louisiana (Louisiana)

Colorado College (Colorado)

Today there are 16 Division III programs in Texas, with more probable transfers from NAIA in the near future. (Niles North)  With the correct approach and guidance from King, Trinity is well positioned to continue being at the forefront of the ever changing landscape of Division III Athletics.
