Scholarships Available at Other Schools

Bega also discussed how different the culture was at Trinity at the time. Trinity Baseball was not the powerhouse school it is today. Bega recalled losing seasons during the first two years that he played.  He thinks this was due to Trinity being the only baseball program in Texas that could not offer athletic scholarships.  This contributed to Trinity not being as competitive or successful as other Texas baseball programs because all of the teams they played out of conference offered scholarships.  Bega stated, “Without the use of scholarships, it is impossible for a team to be successful and keep [that] success [going] without a history of winning.” (Personal interview, 2017) Trinity had not yet developed a winning culture at that time.  Bega thinks the addition of other Division III schools in Texas starting in 1994 really helped to level the playing field and bring Trinity into the golden age of sports that it enjoys today.
